About Rob Carter

Rob was Foundation Head of Deakin Health Economics and a former Director of the Deakin University Strategic Research Centre in Population Heath. He has held a number of senior positions, including: Head of the University of Melbourne Health Economics Group Deputy Director of the Monash University Health Economics Unit and Head of the Economics and Evaluation Unit within the Technology Assessment Branch at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (1990-1993). Prior to his academic career, Rob was a senior Commonwealth public servant, including time as a Senior Private Secretary in Senator Button’s Office. Rob is familiar with the needs of government, having had practical experience in policy, research and administrative positions across three departments (Transport, Aviation, Health & Ageing). In 2002, Rob was awarded an NHMRC Population Health Career Development Award to continue his work on the application of economic appraisal to population health. In 2005 his research achievements were recognized by the University of Melbourne with his receipt of the School of Population Health Open Award for Excellence in Research Achievement. In 2010 his research achievements were further recognised by Deakin University (School Award for Research Excellence) and VicHealth (Special Award for Contribution to Illness Prevention Knowledge). Further research awards followed in 2011 and 2012, culminating in ‘Alfred Deakin Professor’ recognition in 2013 – this is the highest honour Deakin University can bestow on a member of academic staff in recognition of sustained and outstanding contributions. Rob has also taught extensively over his academic career, carrying senior postgraduate course, unit and supervision responsibilities. His track record includes over $25M in research income and over 300 publications.
