How I helped a Senior Financial Controller move to a new hotel company where he felt more valued, less burnt out with more time to spend with family… One of my candidates, John, had been working at this current hotel group for 5 years, he felt burnt out, fed up and depleted. As he moved up the ranks the pressure increased, the culture seemed to deteriorate as well. A blame culture had worked its way into management. The MD had surrounded himself with Yes men who were afraid to tell him the truth, but instead swept matters under the rug and left the employees to pick up the pieces. John regularly received aggressive Head Office calls on behalf of the MD asking why numbers didn’t add up and what was going wrong with certain areas of the business. Most other employees received the same treatment, it was creating a toxic environment. John was slowly being dragged away from the commercial side of the business, no longer focusing on helping build, plan and think big, instead most of his time was spent handling the day to day accounting. Tedious work that was well below his pay grade. He felt incredibly frustrated. John was also working 12 hour days and weekends, spending most of his life at the hotel. He has two kids, 5 and 8, both of which never got to see him. Enough was enough, he had to make a change. Because I’ve been working within hospitality financial recruitment for 30+ years I have an extensive network of businesses that I know on a one to one basis. I had the perfect place for John to progress his career. He went for an interview with the VP of finance, they got on really well. Shortly after he was offered a new FC position, a 10k salary increase and better benefits package. Straight away he felt supported. The culture was friendly, inviting, there was an atmosphere of everyone working together to get the job done. He was able to focus on the commercial side, he developed strong relationships with decision makers. He felt closer to them, comfortable speaking his mind and contributing. His role felt more focused, no longer being dragged away every hour to work on menial tasks, instead he could do his best work. He also got to see his family more! The progression was clear, the company wanted him to succeed. Within 2 years he was promoted to Regional Finance Director of Northern Europe!
