Background
About Rob Mason
I have over 30 years experience within a police role. This includes over 13 years within the Royal Airforce Police. Having enlisted in June 1987, I was promoted in 1991 and managed a group of Junior NCOs. In 1997, I qualified as a RAF Police Special Investigator, having responsibility of overseeing all investigations on the RAF bases where I was stationed. I served both in the UK and overseas, including within joint service environments, before leaving the RAF in February 2001. In April 2002, I joined Northumbria Police. Initially I was stationed on a response shift in the east end of Newcastle upon Tyne. In 2008, I was stationed on a response shift in the South East area of Northumberland, before moving to a response shift in North Tyneside in 2013. Response policing is a challenging role, dealing with members of the public, sometimes in heightened emotional states. The duties included, but were not limited to, responding to emergency calls and dealing with the incidents in an efficient and effective manner, sometimes in extremely difficult and dangerous situations; investigating sudden deaths and missing persons; investigating crime, identifying victims, witnesses and suspects, interviewing each in accordance with the relevant legislation; completing file submissions within strict timescales for court cases; giving oral evidence at court and producing exhibits; communicating, orally and in writing with other professionals, including senior prosecutors from Crown Prosecution Service, social services, medical professionals, the local authority and the Department for Work and Pensions. In 2015, I was attached to the Neighbourhood Support Team. Duties included applying for and executing search warrants; locating and arresting wanted suspects and, dealing with specific operations as decided by senior management. In 2017, I was attached to the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, working alongside elite detectives, investigating the most serious crimes within the Nothumbria Police area. In 2019, I joined the Secondary Investigation Unit later renamed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID.) Tasks included, but were not limited to, dealing with 'real time' investigations, where a suspect had been arrested and was awaiting interview; submitting evidential files within strict timescales; investigating outstanding crimes and managing exhibits and other seized property. I was also involved in enquiries into sudden deaths, which involved complex circumstances. In February 2022, I retired from Northumbria Police with 30 years pensionable service.
