Background
About Rob Odonoghue
Currently working in an exciting role as a Senior Aerothermal Engineer and Team Lead at Reaction Engines Ltd. I have had amazing opportunities at Reaction including being Lead Aerothermal Engineer developing game-changing thermal management solutions for high-end motorsport; building and leading an early concepts team to develop thermal management solutions for sustainable technologies such as hydrogen fuel cell aircraft and WHRU for the energy industry; and one of the most rewarding opportunities is being a Team Lead to a truly talented group of engineers. Guiding and supporting the development of these engineers and helping them to flourish has been one of the most fulfilling roles in my working life. Additionally, I have a very privileged position of being able to do technical work alongside line management and developing technical customer relationships. My previous role at PCA Engineers Ltd. was a great experience that allowed me to grow as an engineer and gain confidence in my skills. This is a small turbo machinery consultancy where I specialised in centrifugal compressor design. Being a small company, I dove into detailed design work very quickly and directly delivered solutions to customers. By the end of my time there I was a Senior Engineer overseeing my own customer, leading the communications, and being responsible for all deliverables. Moving to Reaction, I broadened my technical knowledge by designing heat exchangers and fluid ducting. This expanded my aerothermal expertise but was also an opportunity to bring the skills I gained over more than 3 years from a customer-facing role. Due to this experience, I started the early concepts team at Reaction and have been developing a framework for presenting work to customers and teaching engineers the essential skills in delivering work to a variety of audiences, making sure the key message is clear with the right level of technical information to allow them to understand the solution. During my studies, I was fortunate to attend three top universities in engineering. In 2016, I completed an MSc in Thermal Power and Fluid Engineering at the University of Manchester, with first-class honours. Throughout my studies, I enjoyed a lot of what university had to offer from competing on various sports teams to being an active member of the Engineering Society and the Student Union Ents department. University studies was an area I excelled, receiving multiple awards for continued high standards and finishing at the top of my class in both undergraduate and master's.
