Background
About Rob Ring
I have been actively producing video in one form or another for 30 years. I started out as a "Fine Artist" but eventually became jaded by the Gallery-culture-machine and simply fell in love with the medium. My early performance-based work was featured in countless group & solo exhibitions nationally and abroad, and earned me the reputation as "everyone’s (second) favourite Video Artist". My artistic practice often integrated video projection into live performances for theatre groups, symphonies, and other special events. Personal highlights from this early era of my career were working with Video pioneers such as William Wegman, John Baldessari & Vito Acconci, and doing Projection Design for MT Space’s iconic The Last 15 Seconds & Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon with the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony Orchestra. Around the turn of the Century (wow, that makes me feel old), my focus turned to documentary filmmaking, with a particular interest in local history. After serving as Editor on the theatrically released "Love Lost & Found: The Story of Mel Brown", I made my Directorial debut with "Care For the Child: The Story of the Bridgeport General". Care For the Child’s theatrical sales exceeded even my ambitious projections, and went on to have 15 sold-out screenings over the course of 2 months. In the past few years my professional attention has been focussed on working with organizations/projects that contribute positively to the human experience. I have a particular interest in working with organizations that help the marginalized, especially the homeless. I can’t say that my video work is activism, or enacting social reform, but I do focus my attention on projects that bring positive energy into the world, either by drawing attention to socio-political issues or by celebrating community members who are making the world a better place. In the post-COVID era, I’ve been spending much of my time facilitating online training sessions in Zoom and MS Teams. The bottom line? If you have a tech need, whether it be video production, online communications, or pretty much anything else that uses visuals and a computer… I’m your guy. I am also a devout believer in the Oxford Comma & can build a vicious spreadsheet. Oh. I also play Bass for The MacQueens, am a loving father to two amazing teenage daughters, and derive great joy from Mariachi music and BBQing.
