I design and construct medical devices for research physicians performing studies using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Typically a clinician needs a custom imaging coil for the specific body region of interest, such as the optic nerve, carotid artery, or breast. While consulting with Radio-frequency and Biomedical engineers, I specialize in designing and fabricating the hardware to comfortably position the patient, house the antennas and electronics, and keep fluids contained within the MRI scanner. The unique high-strength magnetic field environment of MRI offers numerous challenges that often require novel design solutions. Advanced SolidWorks modeling and 3D printing have become standard practice in my day-to-day workflow, and will prove even more serviceable in the near future as devices become even more patient-specific.
