Background
About Robert Black
I have been asked what is the most important thing to do to successfully manage projects. After 25 years of managing projects, here is my top ten list of my best and most recommended project habits- 10 - I begin by talking to stakeholders to understand business goals. No matter what stage the project is as, understanding priorities is essential in driving the project forward- 9 - My project charter is my best friend. I comprehensively write one that everyone understands and agrees to. The list of what is not in my project can be as critical as what is in scope- 8 - I define roles and responsibilities of everyone involved in the project. This is also the secret of creating a high performance teams. It can also be the key to getting "projects in trouble" back on track- 7 - I plan constantly throughout the project- 6 - I work to negotiate to win-win outcomes- 5 - I work to motivate and excite my team. I clear the path for my team so they can focus and perform. My team does not work for me; rather I work for them - 4 - I like to be friendly to Vendors - they are part of your team. But do not be friends: my job is to protect the interests of my Clients. Put everything you expect from your vendor in writing- 3 - I try to be honest and objective in reporting the health and status of my project. I see things as they are now, not as I hope they will be later- 2 - I track everything: budget, schedules, scope, dependencies and decisions. Manage risks daily. I constantly prioritize, but details are important- 1 - I take ultimate responsibility for manage & communicate everything happening on my project. Bottom line: I never stop learning, I never stop improving. I can never shoot a perfect score, but I can keep getting better at my game.
