Background

About Robert Cahalan

Robert Cahalan, fully retired as of December 2024, was Emeritus NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, former Director of NASA Sun Earth Research, Project Scientist of SORCE & TCTE missions, and TSIS due for 2017 launch to Int'l Space Station, former Chief of Climate and Radiation Laboratory at NASA/Goddard, Emeritus Senior Scientist at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, and Emeritus President of the International Radiation Commission, held adjunct positions at UMD, Lead Scientist THOR lidar, the International Intercomparison of 3D Radiation Codes, and ex officio NASA representative of U.S. Global Change Research Program, founding chair of the Observations Working Group, member of the DOE ARM & NASA Landsat Science Teams, graduate advisor at universities in USA, Canada, and Netherlands, Visiting Scientist at NCAR, Aspen Center for Physics, Warsaw Theoretical Physics Institute, and ECMWF in Reading, England. Dr. Cahalan's research on clouds established & extended the "independent pixel approximation"(IPA), and an "effective thickness approximation"(ETA) relating cloud optical properties to cloud structure. With colleagues at Goddard & Los Alamos Dr Cahalan designed a lidar sytem "Thickness from Offbeam Returns." THOR system employs multiple field-of-view wide-angle receiver to determine thickness of clouds, ice and snow. Cahalan developed a set of benchmarks for 3-dimensional radiative transfer codes, and a community 3d Monte Carlo code. Cahalan published on predictability and chaos, fluctuation-dissipation in stochastic models, diffusive "cloud dots", and "doubly decoupled" energy balance model. In 1990 he published with son Gabriel "Chaotic rhythms of a dripping faucet" observing and predicting chaotic drips with intermittency and apparent intransitivity. Dr. Cahalan uses leaky faucets to motivate discussions of Earth's complex climate. Specialties: climate analysis, climate modeling, energy nonlinear dynamics, radiative transfer, lidar system design, monte carlo simulation, solar spectral irradiance
