About Robert Cartland

I am an experienced optics and photonics professional that has worked for companies ranging in size from tiny start-ups to large defense contractors. I am currently a Sr Product Manager at ChromoLogic LLC in Monrovia, California. ChromoLogic is a dynamic R&D company with several products in development within our life sciences and industrial solutions groups. I am transitioning several optics-based technologies into products and leading engineering efforts related to optical systems improvements. During my career, I have helped develop optical test systems to characterize structures as small as quantum dots and as large as satellite sensors. I have also designed, fabricated and tested semiconductor photonic devices including spatial light modulators, lasers, and detectors. I have published numerous technical papers and presentations and have won multiple best-in show awards at corporate symposiums. I am a Fellow and Past President (2009-1010) of the Optical Society of Southern California, and the current Website Chair. I am also a member of the Optical Society (OSA), SPIE and the Photonics Society. I am also a screenwriter and produced librettist. My opera, OLVERA STREET, premiered on stage in November, 2015 and had a second run, under the title GOLONDRINA, in May of 2017. I am also an avid supporter of mercury-free dentistry and wrote a lengthy review of the debate surrounding the use of mercury in silver-colored tooth-restoration materials. My paper is used as supplemental material in the training of mercury-free dentists by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT.org).
