About Robert D Winfield

I am a surgeon–leader who builds programs, people, and systems that endure. Over the past 15 years, I’ve led teams that have expanded surgical services, launched new programs, improved efficiency, and built research capacity from the ground up. As Vice Chair for Academic Affairs and Division Chief of Acute Care Surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center, I’ve guided an $8 million division, recruited and retained exceptional faculty, and mentored more than 50 faculty, fellows, and residents. My work bridges the academic and operational worlds: balancing clinical excellence, research innovation, and system integration. I currently serve as Vice Chair of the American College of Surgeons Board of Governors and am completing an MBA at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management with a Certificate in Healthcare Leadership. Beyond metrics, my career is driven by a simple philosophy: Tomorrow Comes Today. Whether mentoring a trainee, launching a new program, or shaping policy, I believe leadership means doing the hard work today that builds a better system for tomorrow.
