About Robert Dassanowsky

As a duel citizen EU/US academic, Dassanowsky has become particularly known for his influential work on Austrian/Central European film culture. His books include Austrian Cinema: A History (2005), New Austrian Film (ed, 2011), Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (ed, 2012), World Film Locations: Vienna (ed, 2012), Screening Transcendence: Film under Austrofascism and the Hollywood Hope 1933–38 (2018). Dassanowsky also serves on editorial and festival boards. Dassanowsky is active as an independent producer and head of the Belvedere Film company. Recent projects include the award winning documentary Felix Austria!(2013) and the dramatic short Menschen (2012) He served as associate producer on Dog Eat Dog (2012) with Zachary Quinto and the features Deadline with Eric Roberts (2012), Styria starring Stephen Rea (2013), and The Creep (2014). He served as producer on the feature Chariot (2014), on Ally Acker's documentary, Reel HERstory, with Jodie Foster (2014), on the Austrian film, Der Bauer zu Nathal (2017), and on the award winning docu-feature, One More Step West is the Sea: Ruth Weiss (2022). Dassanowsky was named the Carnegie Foundation/CASE U.S. Professor of the Year for Colorado in 2004 and decorated by the Austrian President in 2005. Dassanowsky has received several academic awards from the University of Colorado and is an elected Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and of the Royal Society of Arts, and a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. He joined the board of advisors of the Salzburg Institute of Religion, Culture and Arts in 2014. A voting member of the European Film Academy, Dassanowsky has served as president of the Austrian Studies Association and is a recipient of the University of Colorado's Thomas Jefferson Award for 2015. Dassanowsky is director of the Elfi von Dassanowsky Foundation, named after his film and arts pioneering mother, which in addition to international arts and humanitarian grants, sponsors the Elfi von Dassanowsky Prize for a work by a female filmmaker at the annual Vienna Independent Shorts Festival (VIS),
