About Robert Davies

Rob has worked in the Australian and overseas mining industry for the past 38 years. Since obtaining his initial Bachelor of Science (Geo Science) in 1978, he extended his formal training with post graduate qualifications in Mineral Economics from Macquarie University and more recently in Minerals Risk Management from University of Queensland. Rob has worked with various Rio Tinto companies for the past 36 years across a range of business units and commodities at both underground and open pit operations working in a variety of line management and support/functional roles. His current role is Chief Advisor Major Hazards Risk Management for Rio Tinto Limited based in Bundoora Melbourne. In the past 20 years has successfully led change in the workplace in diverse roles in HR/Organisation Effectiveness and HSE and as a line manager in mobile equipment maintenance. Each of these roles strongly reinforced the linkages between effective leadership and positive outcomes in HSE. Throughout his career Rob consistently demonstrated application of his analytical skills across a range of disciplines from geology, HR, Maintenance to HSE. He applies principles derived from Six Sigma and Lean training to derive novel interpretations from the data, deriving meaning to this analysis and applying influencing skills to drive improvement strategies at a business level. Rob is a highly motivated and energetic individual who enjoys challenge; his open and engaging style allows him to quickly form effective working relationships with people from the shop floor level to executive management. His extensive operations background combined with a pragmatic approach to problem solving provides him the ability to positively influence operational leaders as a peer, familiar with their operational context. His strengths include the ability to develop his own goals which is coupled with a strong determination to complete and succeed in his tasks.
