About Robert Elliott

As a research associate with the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at the University of Alberta, I have over 20 years of experience in research pertaining to wireless communication systems.(This includes the time obtaining my M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees, as well as my experience as a Post-Doctoral Fellow.) The topics I have investigated generally pertain to resource resource management, allocation, and optimization for the physical (PHY/L1) and medium access control (MAC/L2) layers of wireless cellular networks. My research background covers a broad range of areas, including (but not limited to)- Coordinated transmission techniques for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular networks, including cell-free massive MIMO - Hybrid analog-digital beamforming for millimetre-wave (mmWave) cellular systems - Radio resource management for broadband heterogeneous cellular networks - Modelling of cellular networks using stochastic geometry methods - Stochastic metaheuristic optimization techniques (e.g, genetic algorithms, particle swarm) Most recently, over the past few years, the research group I am part of has examined applying machine learning techniques to these types of research problems. Primarily, we have focused on the use of conditional generative adversarial networks (CGANs), but we have also investigated aspects of multi-agent reinforcement learning, federated learning, and long short-term memory (LSTM) networks.
