Background
About Robert Gerhardt
I’m an internationally minded photographer and writer currently based in New York City. For more than 20 years, I have worked as a photographer in the documentary, photojournalism, corporate, and cultural heritage fields. I have extensive experience in image editing; pitching original stories; collaborating with editors and photographers; project research; interviewing; and licensing and sourcing photographs. I’m a diehard news junkie with an avid interest in current events and international affairs. In my extensive work as a documentary photographer, I have covered the lives of ethnic Karen refugees along the Thailand/Myanmar border; Muslim American communities across the United States; The Black Lives Matter Movement in New York City; the early days of the pandemic in Tokyo; and many other topics. My work has taken me around the United States and to places such as Pakistan, Hong Kong, and Thailand. Both national and international publications have featured my work, including The Guardian, GQ Japan, The New York Times, The Huffington Post, Haaretz, and Suddeutsche Zeitung. My work has been in numerous solo and group exhibitions in North America, Europe, and Asia. My photos are also housed in several museum collections around the world. I am also currently a collections photographer at The Museum of Modern Art, where I document the museum's extensive collections and do press photography for exhibitions. I perform photo editing, color correction, and metadata tagging. I also work with the museum’s DAM system and project management software. Previously I have worked at Sotheby's, The Whitney Museum of American Art, Jobson Publishing, and the National Museum of the American Indian. I am a contributing writer for Blind Magazine where I cover photography; photographers; photo books and exhibitions; and broader issues related to photojournalism. Additionally, I wrote a series of articles about the refugee crisis stemming from the War in Ukraine with our photographer in the field. Previously, as columnist for the Hong Kong Free Press, I wrote about press freedom issues around the APAC region and their relationships to events around the globe. I have also written articles for a diverse array of other outlets, from The Diplomat to The Brooklyn Rail.
