About Robert Gonzalez
Dr. Robert Gonzalez joined the New York City Police Department in August 1993, and began his career as a patrol officer in the 101st Precinct. He was assigned to the Police Academy as an instructor in 1998, promoted to the rank of sergeant in supervisor in Spanish Harlem, and assigned as a supervisor at the Police Academy in 2001. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 2003 and was assigned as Operations Coordinator in Transit District 12. In 2008 he was reassigned to the NYPD Training Bureau where he held many positions in law enforcement training initiatives. Currently, Dr Gonzalez is the Chief of Policy and Training for the NYS Attorney General’s Investigations Division. In 2014 he was promoted to a senior leadership position in the NYPD- in his role as Assistant Commissioner of Training, he was responsible for the research, evaluation, and implementation of new and innovative training paradigms in the Departments new state-of-the-art training facility in College Point Queens. Dr Gonzalez is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), ACJS and a board member of St John's University's Homeland Security and Criminal Justice Academic Program Advisory Boards. Commissioner Gonzalez retired from the NYPD in March of 2015 and became a program dean at the University of Phoenix in the College of Security and CJ. In 2017, Dr Gonzalez began a tenure-track position at St John’s University in the Dept of CJ, Legal Studies and Homeland Security. Specializing in criminal justice and emergency management programs. In 2020 Dr Gonzalez was tapped by the US State Department to assess and evaluate the Nigerian Police Force- that work led to a new training academy for the Transitional Police Unit. Dr Gonzalez has extensive experience in policing, training, emergency management, and policy development. Dr Gonzalez is currently the Deputy Commissioner for Training & Development for NYC’s Department of Correction where he oversees the training and education for over uniform and non-uniform members of the agency.
