Background
About Robert Jacobi
I have worked over 40 years in the Appalachian Orogen and Basin. My expertise includes black shale (including fractures, faults and folds), tectonics, structure, seismic, sedimentology, stratigraphy, aeromag, gravity, remote sensing, FMI logs, the northern Appalachian Basin, and marine G&G. My research methodology involves integrating as many tools and data sets as possible to realize a unified, complete picture of the problem and solution. My present focus is on faults, fractures, and folds in the black shales, as observed in seismic, FMI logs and other borehole imaging systems, core, and field work. I have worked in the Utica since 1980 and in the Upper Devonian black shales since 1989. I have authored or co-authored over 325 papers, book chapters, abstracts, and have co-edited two books dealing with the Appalachian Basin and Orogen; these publications encompass all the expertise fields listed above. I am both a field and lab geoscientist, and at University at Buffalo I have managed large multi-institutional consortia for research projects for the past 21 years. My goal for black shale research is to integrate the knowledge gained from various tools in order to understand and predict 1) the structures observed in the black shales, and 2) the depositional and post-depositional effects of structure on black shale. Specialties: black shale (including fractures, faults and folds), tectonics, structure, seismic, sedimentology, stratigraphy, aeromag, gravity, remote sensing, FMI logs, the northern Appalachian Basin, mentoring and teaching, managing diverse groups
