Background
About Robert Knutson
As a recent graduate of Montana State University with a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, I am eager to apply my skills and expertise in a professional setting. Throughout my academic journey, I have gained hands-on experience in developing mechanical and mechatronic devices for academia, with a particular emphasis on medical device design. During my time as a Graduate Research Assistant, I designed and built a custom mobile treadmill for gait rehabilitation training. This involved developing a fully customized hardware and software solution to manage all treadmill functions, including specialized system controls and an intuitive UI to visualize data and manage system settings. Through this process, I honed my skills in integrated software design, prototype fabrication techniques, and medical device design. In addition to my research work, I was selected to serve as the Chief Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Mechanical Engineering Capstone program, where I managed a team of 7 Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA) responsible for over 250 undergraduate students. I coordinated GTA efforts, ensured quality verification, and managed incident response, resulting in improved design quality and a significant reduction in project failure rates. Prior to my graduate studies, I worked as a Mechanical Engineer in Training at Harvey's Plumbing and Heating, where I gained experience in designing duct, sanitary sewer, and hydronic systems for residential and commercial projects. I also facilitated coordination between various disciplines in the As-Built environment. As an intern at ROC wheels, a company that designs wheelchairs for children in developing countries, I was responsible for managing volunteer activities, drafting U.S. Patents, conducting research and development, testing and verifying models, managing inventory, and optimizing product and assembly flow. I am proficient in software packages such as Revit, SolidWorks, and MATLAB, as well as programming languages including C++ and Python. I also have extensive experience in rapid prototyping and design for manufacturing. Thank you for considering my profile, and I look forward to discussing any opportunities further.
