About Robert Krueger

Robert Krueger is Professor of Human Geography and Head of the Social Science and Policy Studies Department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He is the founding director of the Institute of Science and Technology for Development (InSTeD). In three years, InSTeD has secured more than a $1 million USD in funding. Krueger also spent six years as Guest Professor of Sustainable Spatial Development at the University of Luxembourg (2012-2019. His expertise is in sustainable development, from urban/rural, economic development, appropriate technology, training, and poverty assessment. He currently serves as the Director of WPI’s Institute of Science and Technology for Development. He is also the founding Editor-in-Chief of The WPI Press and the Journal of Integrated Global STEM. Krueger has edited four books on sustainable development, guest edited seven special journal issues, and published dozens of peer-reviewed papers. More recently, Krueger has written in the area of artificial intelligence and global development, with a special focus on poverty alleviation through localized markets and training. For poverty interventions, Krueger has co-created AI tools using The Poverty Stoplight data from 59 countries and over family respondents. He has also worked with colleagues at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University to create fine-tuned, localized large language models for artisans in Lagos, Nairobi, and Accra. Through his research Krueger has collaborated with partners in more than 40 countries.
