About Robert Laport
I am a field and organismal biologist by training, with experience ranging from herpetology and intertidal ecology, to botany and molecular biology. While my research interests remain wide ranging, I am currently focused on polyploid speciation and cytogeography. My aim is to identify the important features in the development of reproductive isolation between interacting populations. This work will help elucidate the underpinnings of nascent speciation between diploid and polyploid populations. I am performing this research in the North American desert dominant Creosote Bush (Larrea tridentata, Zygophyllaceae) through the establishment of permanent field populations, ecological, phenological, and physiological measurements, assessments of phylogenetic relationships and nuclear marker diversity, the reproductive status of F1 hybrids, and characterization of pollinator communities.
