Background
About Robert McLain
I've had concurrent careers as a martial arts professional and geospatial information science professional. In the past, I've pushed my first career as a martial art professional and instructor in the background and highlighted corporate technical skills on my LinkedIn profile. This has been a disservice to the skills I bring to the table and will now include that information in my jobs and profile. For martial arts, I've operated a branch school of the International Chayon-Ryu Martial Arts Association from 1994- 2020, written articles for Black Belt Magazine and Totally Taekwondo Magazine, served as adjunct faculty at UT-Arlington directing and teaching credit self-defense for women classes and helped in the film industry with fight choreography. I have a research project on file with the Library of Congress comparing martial arts punches to several handgun rounds. I'm currently contracted with the Department of the Army to teach self-defense at Torii Station at Okinawa, Japan. For Geospatial Information Science and analytics, I like to problem solve and help people reach their goals. I have a passion for learning, which is driven by a curiosity of things around me. I am the person in the meeting that doesn't mind asking dumb or hard questions just so I can fully understand something or to reveal a potential unforeseen pitfall in a project. I have experience with software platforms across the geoscience and engineering disciplines. I've collaborated with team members to solve problems, create solutions and automate workflows. Specific petroleum-related software included: Petra, Wellview, ArcGIS, Alteryx, SQL Server Management Studio, SEEQ and Spotfire. My major role during 2016-2020 included the duty of an offset frac management specialist that coordinated forecasts of necessary well protections due to offset Frac activity in the Permian Basin. I regularly worked with data source owners to ensure data consistency and accuracy. I developed several data processes that evolved from a combination of ArcGIS/python scripts, VBA code (taking many hours of time) to automated models created in Alteryx that take minutes to run. I taught classes focused on offset frac management processes. I worked with the learning and development department to create an online class for offset frac management. Currently, I'm working with the Land Department at Noble Royalties with a great group of folks. Recent efforts include use of Thomson Reuters Document Intelligence (formerly ThoughtTrace) for PDF document ECR and data extraction.
