Background

About Robert Michiels

Took on a new position at Aecon. Should be some outstanding challenges and new Currently working on a temporary assignment for BWC in Saskatchewan Canada. Assignment quality Control oversight for refurbishment and installation of major power supplier in Saskatchewan. Also part of FOAK for carbon capture and sequester innovation project. A rebuilt of Boundary Dam 3, which will be custom designed for carbon capture systems, is currently underway to commence operation in 2013. SaskPower estimates it would cost $1.2 billion to rebuild Boundary Dam 3 with a fully integrated carbon capture and storage system. Boundary Dam Power Station is SaskPower’s largest generating facility, with six units and a combined generating capacity of 824 megawatts (MW). The company’s three coal-fired power plants account for about 50 per cent of its generating capacity of 3,509 MW. SaskPower has a total available generating capacity of 3,982 MW when the production of independent power producers is taken into account. In the carbon capture and storage process, CO2 is captured and transported through a pipeline made from carbonized steel. The CO2 is stored deep below the surface in stable geological formations. These formations have been carefully selected and match a strict set of criteria. Typically, they consist of layers of porous rock located deep underground and beneath a layer or multiple layers of non-porous rock. Deep saline formations provide the largest potential area for the storage of CO2. Depleted oil and gas reservoirs have similar properties as saline formations and are considered secure repositories for CO2. I am very proud and grateful to be a small part of this very innovative and exciting project.
