Background

About Robert Spirig

Very short so far:>Process Owner for data flow at the MCR (Stack: IDL/Python/MySQL/Bash/(Linux/Windows))>Product Developer/Owner of dolueg2 (https://mcr.unibas.ch/dolueg2/index.php?project=basel), the measurement data website of the MCR with data from Basel, Namibia, Heraklion (Stack: Python/PHP/HTML/CSS/JS/MySQL)>Product Developer/Owner of the MCR data portal (link upon inquiry, Stack: PHP/MySQL/JS/HTML/CSS)>GIS Expert/Lecturer giving first year introductory lecture (QGIS/ArcMap, designing sensible exercises +(boring) PowerPoint/Word/Excel)>Often primary support for programming of Bsc/Msc students at MCR >Product Developer/Product Owner of the MCR Meteokiosk (https://mcr.unibas.ch/mb) that shows current weather and lectures (Stack: Bash/Python/PHP/HTML/CSS/JS)on a Raspberry Pi)>Product Developer/Product Owner of the MCR Webcam (https://mcr.unibas.ch/dolueg2/index.php?project=webcam & var=west & button=1) that shows current weather and a timelapse (Stack: Bash/Python/PHP on a Raspberry Pi) Slightly longer: During my PhD in meteorology at the University of Basel I taught several courses at different levels and visited scientific conferences, allowing me to tune content to audiences of varying proficiency. The introductory class to geoinformatics with around 100 students made me realize the usefulness and need for OpenData, especially in the context of GIS (worked mainly with QGIS/ArcMap). For my research on the fog in the Central Namib, I developed a pipeline that combines ground measurement data with satellite data when fog events occurred, linking different domains. Out of passion for OpenData and the visualisation I developed Dolueg2, a framework for the concurrent visualisation of many time series at once. It consists of a Python/MySQL (or IDL/MySQL) backend and a PHP/MySQL/HTML/CSS/JS web frontend. Consequentially, I was responsible for the data flow at the Meteorology, Climatology and Remote Sensing Lab (MCR), deepening my knowledge of IDL over the years. Side projects that I built to develop my skills were a Raspberry Pi Webcam that delivers timelapse videos of the weather in Basel, a Raspberry Pi based kiosk with the current weather and upcoming lectures/talks, a web interface to download measurement data from our MCR database with the option to interactively visualise them.
