About Robert Townsend
I am the Disability Lead at Sport New Zealand, responsible for influencing and overseeing initiatives in Sport New Zealand's 2024-28 strategy, specifically focusing on addressing inequities for disabled people across sport, active recreation and play. In addition, I hold an academic appointment at the University of Waikato. My research is interdisciplinary, bridging qualitative research, social science and disability studies. Both independently and as part of a broader team I am engaged in over $2m of funded research in the areas of disability, sport and sport coaching, across the Health Research Council and Royal Society Marsden Fund, as well as Sport New Zealand. I've consulted for a range of international and national agencies, including the Commonwealth Sport Foundation, the European Paralympic Committee and Special Olympics NZ. These projects include developing inclusive strategies and frameworks, assessing social impact and delivering leadership programmes.
