About Roberta Cantow

My films explore uncommon subjects. I am interested in things that go unnoticed (clothes on the line as emblematic of the unseen work of women) or are maligned and misunderstood (the accordion) or which need to be seen through a different lens (the creative power of women). I believe that there is always more than meets the eye. My films have a poetic, lyrical approach, There are always underlining themes: surviving the demands of life, making meaning, spirituality manifested in a variety of ways, the role of the imagination and creativity. My latest film, Accordions Rising,(Accordions have returned with an exciting vengeance). Not a Still Life (The Evolution and Naked Truth of a Gay Jewish Man) is the story of one man's search for an identity and sense of belonging. and Bloodtime Moontime Dreamtime.is a trilogy with a focus on the women's sprituality movment, and Clotheslines was a documentary about the symbolic and artistic role of "doing the laundry" in women's In addition to filmmaking, I create visual pieces using the "digital storytelling" format (originated with the Center for Digital Storytelling, Berkeley) to create multimedia for fundraising, community building, marketing and education. These may be for organizations with a mission and need to communicate ideas or individuals wanting to promote their work or pay tribute to a loved one.
