About Roberto Reid

Who is Roberto Reid? I am currently a PhD candidate who also serves as an Esports & Sport Business Management lecturer in the School of Business and Law at the University of East London. My research seeks to explore the role gender plays in participation within competitive video gaming more commonly known as Esports. I am a sports and media consultant with over a decade of experience who specialises in national and international sports events management, development and governance who has held several executive positions and worked with both national and international sports organisations, from over 80 countries. These positions have seen me, among other things develop a strategy for the sustainable growth of eSports within the United Kingdom. Prior to this, I worked for the international governing body for one of the world's fastest-growing sports Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and was part of the events management team that facilitated the 2015 and 2016 IMMAF World and European MMA championships which took place in the UK and United States respectively. While there, I acted as head of Member Relations and was responsible for the strategic planning, governance, development, management, recruitment, guidance, and support of its member services. My work resulted in their membership base growing by 86 percent, which helped make them eligible for membership to the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), bringing them a step closer to the sport being recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). I hold an MSc in Sports Management from the University of East London and I am also a mentor for underprivileged children and adolescents.
