About Robin Broersen

Our brain with all its complexity is absolutely fascinating. It forms the basis of everything we experience, think or do. But how does our brain process information at the level of single brain-cell (or neuron)? And how does neuronal activity give rise to complex behaviours? Questions such as these drive me as neuroscientist and carrying out experiments to answer them are my passion. During my PhD research in Amsterdam, Netherlands, I studied how we learn to execute and time movements and how the part of our brain called the ‘cerebellum’ is involved. I also looked into what happens to our motor learning when our cerebellum does not work as it should. I’ve had the chance to use a wide range of techniques, from human fMRI to electrophysiology.In my current role as postdoctoral researcher at the Australian National University I’m working on the question of how our brain stitches together the visual images from both our eyes, so that we have a well-organised visual representation of the outside world. More specifically, I’m interested in how individual neurons in our visual system integrate synaptic inputs and generate the neuronal output that ultimately drives behaviour. The experimental techniques I use to conduct my studies include in vivo whole-cell electrophysiology, viral injections, optogenetics and behaviour.
