It's never too late to start” is a bit of a cliche, but cliches are cliches for a reason. They are true more often then not. I have worn quit a few hats up-to this point. I have been an architectural student, a fast-food employee, a grocery store worker even a cleaner and I have had my very own paper route.(not necessarily in the order you would expect) Now I've stuck my head well and truly into the IT world. But what I always find myself doing is trying to help people. The very first thing I programmed was an application to help people with car problems. It was a clumsy attempt, something a bunch of friends tried to hack together in a 24 hour hackathon. It even worked, sort of. At the moment itself it felt like a big achievement and it still does. I would say it was the point at which I realized that in programming I can use most of the skills I've gathered from all the detours taken. Colour coordination, proportion and ergonomics are valuable tools in architecture as well as in designing applications. Designing and programming a beautiful website is all good and well, but if it isn't what the client is looking for, it's worthless. The very first step has to be being able to communicate clearly and being able to vocalize your vision and ideas. These are all skills learned best by lots and lots of human interaction, like in a customer service environment. Nobody has all the skills they need when they walk out of school, it's all about learning on the job and continued self-development.
