Background

About Robin Tanamachi

I am a research meteorologist and associate professor of atmospheric science. I specialize in radar-based studies of severe storms and tornadoes, numerical analysis, and atmospheric science education research. More personally, I view myself as a cultivator of intellectual capacity in meteorology. I mentor junior atmospheric scientists who propagate out into the world to multiply the impact of scientific literacy and intellectual generosity. My objective as a mentor is to help my mentees the next step in their professional career through a combination of advising, professional development, and networking. My prior graduate students have gone on to positions in the National Weather Service, the academic sector, the private sector, and beyond. We are all here to contribute intellectually to each other; intellectual vitality accelerates everyone's growth. I am also an experimentalist, and I believe that failure is just as valuable as success. As an educator, I focus on making the abstract real for my students and mentees. I accomplish this through an emphasis on experiential and informed learning, getting students out of the classroom and into the field as often as possible. This practice provides intrinsic motivating anchors for students.
