Background

About Robinson Wallace

My graduate career consisted of using weather radar and lightning data to research thunderstorms that produce hail accumulations. My focus was on using operational weather data to validate models, understand the physical processes that differentiate hail accumulating storms from those that don't, and developing methods to predict days likely to produce hail accumulating storms. I've have actively participated in the research project: Colorado Hail Accumulations from Thunderstorms (CHAT) project. CHAT's goals include expanding the understanding of hail accumulating storms as well as increasing awareness of the need for better data collection around hail depth. To help advance awareness about hail-accumulating storms and better develop my communication skills, I took the initiative to compute and display real-time hail accumulations derived from weather radar data. The accumulations are derived from an algorithm that was validated by Wallace et al. 2019 (https://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/full/10.1175/WAF-D-18-0053.1). I completed my Ph.D. in July 2020.
