About Roger Chammas

I am a Full Professor of Oncology at Universidade de São Paulo and direct the Center for Translational Research in Oncology at Instituto do Câncer do Estado de São Paulo, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo. I got an MD degree at Universidade de São Paulo (1988) and a Ph.D. degree at the same university, working at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research under the supervision of Ricardo Brentani (1989-1993). As a post-doctoral fellow, I trained in glycobiology in Ajit Varki's lab at the University of California in San Diego (1994-1997). I have been affiliated with Universidade de São Paulo since 2001. My lab focuses on emerging mechanisms for tumor resistance to different forms of treatment, including aspects of tumor physiology, such as vasculature tone and function. Our lab participates in the International Master Program "From fundamental molecular biosciences to biotherapies", in a partnership with Sorbonne University. Since 2016, I have been an honorary adjunct professor in the Dept. of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I collaborate with Kirill Afonin and his group on RNA nanotechnology. I am an academic editor for Frontiers in Oncology, Cancer Biomarkers, and Clinics. I am a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and of the American Association of Cancer Research, where I serve in the Latin-American subcommittee for International Affairs. I also serve in the Board of Trustees for the Health and Enviromental Sciences Institute, hesiglobal in Washington, D.C. My current project is to organize the Comprehensive Center for Precision Oncology at Universidade de São Paulo.
