About Roger Clark

Roger Clark is director of the Grand Canyon program for the Grand Canyon Trust, a regional conservation organization founded in 1985. I am currently working on preventing existing uranium mines from polluting Grand Canyon Watersheds and stopping a proposed resort and tramway to the confluence of the Little Colorado and Colorado rivers. For summaries of these campaigns, please see: For several years, I worked on national and regional campaigns to prevent new uranium mines from contaminating watersheds that flow directly into Grand Canyon. This resulted in a 20-year ban by the Secretary of the Interior in 2012 on new uranium claims on more than a million acres of public lands that surround Grand Canyon National Park. Until 2010, I was the Trust's air and energy program director. Actions by the Trust led to shutting down the coal-fired Mohave Generating Station in 2005. In 2007, I helped to establish and administered a $5 million Renewable Energy Investment Fund, created in a settlement agreement with the owners of Springerville Power Plant. The Fund made grants for renewable energy and efficiency projects in partnership with indigenous communities throughout the region. My career includes work as a river guide, naturalist, writer, museum education and exhibits director, university faculty, environmental educator (grades K-12), and environmental consultant. I am a second-generation Arizonan, graduate of Northern Arizona University and Yale University, and have served as an educator, advocate, and board member of Sustainable Economic Development Institute, Flagstaff Arts & Leadership Academy, Flagstaff Symphony, and other non-profit organizations based in Flagstaff since 1981.
