Internationally known academic urban community sociologist, researcher and community engagement advisor/activist/practitioner. Expert in applying co-production/co-design and participatory community engagement and research approaches. Successfully undertaken and delivered over 100 international, UK, and regional community research projects funded by a diverse range of sponsors including; UK Equality and Human Rights Commission; UK government departments; Indian Council for Social Science Research; Greater London Authority; local authorities; Clinical Commissioning Groups; Public Health; major national charities; housing associations; a variety of Third Sector/NGO organisations and companies. Global experience and knowledge of urban community regeneration and development, community engagement, community coproduction, and working with diverse communities and community stakeholders. Experienced chair and trustee of several charities, worked pro-bono as a community advisor to community organisations and groups. Established a social research centres at Goldsmiths, University of London and University of Hertfordshire. Lectured at Birkbeck, University of London, University of Essex, University of Bedfordshire, Open University, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, India, and recently at Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya. Authored and co-authored numerous books, book chapters, articles, and research reports on community issues including the much publicised 'road classic' book Destination Nowhere. Before entering academia trained and worked as a youth worker, before undertaking further professional training as a social worker and community development worker.
