Background
About Rohit Menon
After a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering from University of Mumbai and a 4 year stint as an Automation and Drives Systems Commissioning Engineer at Siemens Ltd, Mumbai, Rohit Menon completed his MSc. in Automation and Robotics at Technische Universität Dortmund in 2015, During his masters, he did a research project on Evolutionary Robotics under Prof. Dr. Frank Hoffmann at the Department of Control Systems Engineering, TU Dortmund. For his final master thesis, he developed a shared autonomy scheme for assistive grasping at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) under Jörn Vogel of the Bionics group and Katharina Hertkorn. From 2015 to 2019, he worked as a researcher at DFKI's Robotics Innovation Centre at Bremen in the fields of motion planning and grasping. His focus areas were motion planning, trajectory generation and sensor enabled grasping for mobile manipulators and humanoids. In November 2019, he joined Neura Robotics GmbH as the second engineer for the AI team. He, along with his team lead were responsible for setting up the entire AI framework for providing augmented intelligence to the MAiRA manipulator using its multiple sensors. He was personally responsible for developing perception enabled pick and place capabilities, and obstacle avoidance manoeuvres. He also independently developed the hard real time communication and low level control architecture for the 7 axis arm Rohit wanted to make original scientific contributions to the robotics and perception community. Hence in February 2022, he joined the Humanoid Robots Lab of Prof. Dr. Maren Bennewitz at the University of Bonn as a PhD student. His research areas include viewpoint planning, shape completion and active perception for reducing classification uncertainty
