About Roman Barnes

From a young age, I’ve been fascinated by highway design, sketching road maps of a fictional world in my notebooks. This early passion led me to pursue a career in civil engineering, and now, as a Civil Engineering Technology student at Rochester Institute of Technology, I’m preparing to turn that childhood curiosity into a professional reality. With hands-on experience as a Transportation Construction Inspector for NYSDOT, I’ve worked across various regions on projects involving bridges and drainage systems, ensuring compliance and quality at every step. My technical skills in Autodesk (AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D), MicroStation, STAAD, and more give me a well-rounded foundation for a career in highway design, supported by my real-world inspection experience. Outside the classroom, I’m actively involved in multiple music ensembles, where I arrange music, facilitate rehearsals, and perform. These creative outlets help me stay balanced and sharpen my teamwork and organizational skills. I’m particularly inspired by the transformative infrastructure projects happening across the U.S, especially in upstate New York, where efforts are being made to remove freeways and reconnect communities. I look forward to contributing to such impactful work as I pursue a permanent position as a Transportation Engineer, starting in June 2025.
