About Roman Marchant

With over a decade of experience in Statistical Machine Learning and Bayesian methods, I specialise in decision-making under uncertainty. I am currently Associate Professor and Head of Research at the Human Technology Institute, based at the University of Technology Sydney, where I lead a team focused on causal structure learning and policy decision-making. In academia, I've served as a senior lecturer at the University of Sydney, teaching a diverse range of subjects including Applied Statistics for Complex Data, Bayesian Computational Statistics, Machine Learning and Data Mining, and Quantitative Social Sciences. My teaching approach combines theoretical foundations with practical applications, ensuring students gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Beyond this, I've played a significant role in curriculum development, leading the design of six teaching units for CSIRO's Data61 Next Generation Graduates Program. My research projects often involve collaborations with government departments and policymakers. I develop innovative statistical and AI models that inform and optimise policy decisions, fulfilling a crucial societal need. I hold a PhD in Computer Science, with my early research focused on robotics and environmental monitoring. As an entrepreneur, I've co-founded three successful technology startups with a multinational presence. I am deeply committed to ethical considerations in technology and have organised Australia's first Ethics of Data Science Conference. My work aligns closely with my commitment to bridging the gap between research, industry, and societal needs, fulfilling UTS's mission to drive positive change through innovative and responsible approaches.
