About Romane Oliverio

I am an enthusiastic scientist with a multidisciplinary background. As I prepare to take the first step of my career outside academia, I am willing to step away from the lab bench to broaden my perspective. I strive for purpose, action, responsibilities and impact. My strong problem solving mindset and my keen interest in science pushed me towards engineering for as long as I can remember. My appetite for biotech, medtech and life sciences came later, along with my desire to pursue a career with meaning. My peers usually appreciate my analysis/synthesis skills, and they value the critical, but kind insight I'm able to provide. I am easy to work with, and I always outdo myself when I work in the service of someone else. I also thrive when I work as a mentor: I have had the opportunity to supervise several undergraduate and graduate students, and I have significant teaching and tutoring experience. Knowledge transfer and people empowerment are things I deeply care about. During my time in graduate school, I had the opportunity to take on various responsibilities- I took an active part in lab day-to-day management: equipment maintenance, training of new lab members, stocks management- I learnt to help people by giving them constructive feedback, through i) mentoring visiting students and interns, ii) teaching and tutoring, assisting peer-reviewing papers on a regular basis and iv) being part of abstract selection committees for scientific communication contests- I have developed good scientific writing skills, through i) publishing in peer-reviewed journals, ii) supervising the writing of other scientific publications and grant proposals writing; On the technical side, my graduate training helped me acquire a solid knowledge of biomanufacturing techniques, as well as of the use of biomaterials for drug release and tissue engineering purposes. Besides, my undergraduate studies focused on Mathematics and Physics, and I have graduate degrees in Bioengineering (Ecole Polytechnique, France) and Biomedical Engineering (M.Sc.A, Polytechnique Montréal, Canada). I now feel inspired to put my knowledge, skills and appetite for learning in the service of the Canadian biotech, medtech and life science industry. By doing so, I hope to keep growing and improving, as a professional and as a person.
