About Romina Hashemi

Hello! My name's Romina, and I'm studying linguistics at Simon Fraser University! I double majored in statistics and English at the University of Waterloo, and through co-op, I had the opportunity to work in a number of data-related fields, applying my technical and linguistic skills to a range of machine learning and natural language processing projects. During my time at UW, I particularly enjoyed finding technical solutions to problems I encountered in my coursework and research! For example, when I took a course on construction grammar, I used NLTK's POS-tagging to find examples of constructions I found interesting. Later, when I studied Shakespearean plays, I wrote a function that takes the Folger edition of any play as input and returns a file for each character consisting of the character's lines, which allowed me to identify statistically significant differences in semantic patterns. When I was researching closing particles for my conversation analysis term paper, I wrote a script that identifies instances of the closing particle “so yeah” (regardless of prosodic features) in a database of spoken interaction transcripts saved as.cha files. Given my multidisciplinary academic background, I am passionate about using my diverse skillset to think creatively and approach problems in new ways!
