About Romy Mente

The mysterious, interactive and adaptive functioning of the brain has fascinated me from the moment I learned about its existence. It all started with a TV program showing brain surgery which I watched in awe as a 3-year-old. From then on, the mechanisms underlying development, behavior and consciousness continued to increasingly astonish me. I’ve always had the feeling that, much like in the brain, everything in our world is interconnected. I believe that acknowledging such reciprocal connections in science is key in obtaining the most complete, trustworthy and veracious understanding of reality. Since this is of great importance to me, I completed two Bachelor of Science degrees, namely Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, concurrently at the University of Amsterdam. I chose to do so because I aspire to directly help other people as a medical doctor without having to give up the intruiging and exciting quest of exploring the unknown in science. In the future, I want to help elucidate the meaning of the connections and network activities within our brain. Which areas are connected to each other? What are the functions of these connections? How does this all eventually create or alter our high level cognitive processes in health and disease? To learn more about these topics, I am now pursuing a double Master’s degree in Medicine and Neuroscience at the age of 23. This way, I hope to gain the most recent and detailed knowledge on the psychopathological mechanisms underlying neurologic and psychiatric disorders, as well as qualify as an MD.
