About Rosanna Cuthbert

As an educator for thirty four years, I have always been passionate about student engagement, social justice and arts infused education alongside foundational literacies and basic, essential skills. I believe it’s important to create a space where students are able to convey diverse, multiple ways of knowing and understanding to demonstrate their learning, in addition to reading, writing, and speaking. Our world has changed from an industrialized society and it is critical that we transform our schools to reflect and embrace this change so that our students are better equipped to face the globalized and technologically advancing world in which we live. In addition to a strong focus on academics, we also want our students to be participatory, personally responsible and social justice oriented. Empowering students to think critically and creatively, while providing opportunities to collaborate, to communication, to be contributing citizens, and to develop character through the lens of education for sustainability strengthens school communities and fosters a respectful, safe and thriving learning space. It can be a powerful catalyst for students and staff to realize how living in harmony with others and the world around us enriches the quality of our lives. Weaving the three domains of the environment, human health and well-being, and the economy encompasses the essential learnings of our education for sustainability curriculum outcomes in Manitoba. As principal of SSES, I was honored to receive the 2018 Manitoba Excellence in Outstanding Leadership award, as well as Manitoba Education Eco-Globe “Transformational” school, and 2015 Manitoba Excellence in Sustainability Award.
