About Ross Clare

I'm a writer and creative specialist with a PhD in history and video game research. I was also once a scholar of ancient Greek/Roman history & myth and a writer of history books, and it's my hope to bring this unique set of skills & experiences to help make some fresh, innovative stories! For the game industry, I've worked on RAID: Shadow Legends, Mech Arena, multiple strategy titles, and casual mobile experiences. As an academic, I have written on and released studies on empires in video games, the uses of ancient historiography in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and in July 2021 Bloomsbury Publishers will release my book - the first solo-authored monograph of its kind - on the uses of ancient Greece and Rome in videogames. I also wrote and published a book about classical antiquity in science fiction across literary, onscreen, and digital media. I have taught across a range of subjects at Higher Education level (undergraduate and postgraduate), including classical literature, ancient history, archaeology, film, television, video games and more. My responsibilities included designing and delivering lectures and seminars, supervising student dissertations, managing student progress through Blackboard LMS, and assessing coursework. During this time, I was appointed the Project Co-ordinator of an outreach project at the University of Liverpool from 2018, immediately after my doctoral studies were completed, where I managed the delivery of classical education to schools across Merseyside. This involved managing a budget, organising day events, overseeing classes and activities of a team of teachers, and working to expand the reach of the project primarily to schools in low-income areas. My research, teaching, personal interests, and talents all point towards narratives and stories. I have worked on classical literature, video game theory, and film, television and media theory, and written science fiction, fantasy and historical stories and scripts in my free time, with one sole purpose - to write for a living.
