Background
About Ross Hammond
Philanthropic Networks Manager with the Sunrise Project, helping the effort to shift global finance out of fossil fuels and into clean, renewable energy. Over the course of his career, Ross has worked as a campaigner, funder, and coalition builder. His involvement in the anti-apartheid movement in college led to early work in Kenya, Somalia and at UN Headquarters in New York. He's helped lead successful campaigns to open up the UN to civil society participation, create a global tobacco treaty, and challenge the political & economic power of the fossil fuel industry and those industries which enable it. Ross has helped form & lead both domestic and international coalitions & provided advocacy, strategic campaign and communications consulting to a host of foundations, NGOs & multilateral agencies. At the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids & Framework Convention Alliance he helped usher in the world's first public health treaty, the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. He then created & managed a regranting program to fund & support citizens' groups around the globe as part of the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use. At Friends of the Earth, he used FOIA to publicly expose conflicts of interest in the environmental review of the Keystone XL pipeline leading to an official State Department Inspector General inquiry. Ross then served as US Campaigns Director at Stand.earth where among other campaign wins he helped defeat multiple oil train terminal proposals on the West Coast. In his first 3 years at the Sunrise Project, Ross created a national campaign (Insure Our Future) to pressure U.S. insurers to stop insuring & investing in fossil fuels. He currently manages a portfolio of major philanthropic funders, represents the organization in various funder networks focused on climate and energy & and is involved in other initiatives to move the financial sector out of fossil fuels and into clean energy. A native of Buffalo, he holds a BA in Social Sciences from UC Berkeley & a MA in Applied Economics from American University.
