What makes a company successful? Or, to think of it a different way, why are some companies successful when others struggle? It’s not always the places that have the smartest managers or the most money that make it. If you ask me (and I assume that now you want to know), I think it comes down to culture.Some businesses make the news after they disastrously lay people off remotely just before the holidays or when they solve a workers’ strike by simply firing their employees. But other companies act differently and rarely toot their horn about it. They quietly treat their workers with respect and really try to act as if employees are their most important asset and not just an expense.When I started at Gold Coast, I learned that I could work as hard as I wanted, but nothing got done without the help and support of many other people working with me. I had to learn how to adapt and win their respect to reach my goals. The big breakthrough was when I stopped telling people how to do their jobs and started explaining what I wanted them to do. I saw that my role was simply to set the direction and to remove obstacles from both employees and customers. and then watch as the company succeeded.I don’t claim to be the best leader or the most motivational speaker. What I can say is that I am always learning and always trying to be a better manager and leader than I was before. And that’s all I can ask of myself and for the people who work with me.
