About Roy Byer

I have worked 41+ year as an Industrial Hygienist. I am a CIH, CHMM, RSO and serve as a LSO for General Motors, directing the activities of the Global Laser Safety Committee. I started in this profession in early 1981 working as an IOSHA IH Compliance Officer. With my past medical background working as an Operating Room Technician, I conducted many confined space fatality investigations. Through this work I learned about and conducted inspections of over 200 different types of industrial tasks. Starting in the Fall of 1985 I worked for the Indiana State Board of Health assisting county health departments with HSE challenges. This included conducting IAQ investigations and making presentations on the health hazards of asbestos, which I had acquired an extensive knowledge about. I also served as the Health and Safety officer for several hazardous substance emergency releases and am EPA Grandfathered as an Incident Commander. In May of 1988 I worked for an asbestos consultation firm, providing asbestos inspections, writing asbestos management plans for school systems, conducting asbestos abatement clearance sampling, and supervising asbestos abatement projects. In September of 1991 I worked for the Purdue University EMEP providing IH surveys for various clients and training clients in HAZWOPER procedures. Starting in early January 1992 I started work as a General Motors Industrial hygienist. During my GM career I have provided IH services to transmission, engine, stamping, assembly, and foundry plants. I was the primary author for many of the GM IH Performance and technical standards. These include serving as the SME for Qualitative Exposure Assessment, Asbestos, Laser Safety, Chemical Exposure Limits (OELs), Respirable Crystalline Silica Exposure and Control, Beryllium exposure, IH Sample Quality Assurance, and review of new product SDSs for many GM U.S. sites, as well as the sites I provide IH services to. Recently I have volunteered to serve on the AIHA Risk Assessment, AIHA Exposure Assessment Strategy, and Control Banding Committees. I am also a member of the AIHA Exposure Assessment Strategy Committee Ih Exposure Assessment Standard of Care Subteam.
