Background
About Roy Cheng
I am a self-driven fifth-year student at Beedie School of Business, concentrating in Marketing and Management Information Systems (MIS). Throughout my formative years, I've always had a desire to push myself to greater limits. The fact that I'm reaching new highs in itself is already a sufficient driver for me to continue what I like doing the most. Ultimately though, my intention is that whatever work I complete can further the lives of other people. That is, I find it a rewarding experience to assist others. As such, this is my core life value I endeavour to adhere: to make a difference in those around me. There exists a myriad of options available in the job market: accountant, marketer, economist, statistician, etc; this caused my inability to fully ascertain what my career would entail in the future. What should I choose? Would I actually find joy in what I do? Money above all else? These are perhaps life's greatest questions - reflecting on what to do in the future. However, upon becoming a teaching assistant for BUS 360W (Business Communication), I realized that I truly enjoy teaching. I enjoy passing on my insights to students, which, in turn, they use to educate and further the lives of other people, making this a perpetual process. This ultimately, allows me to uphold the aforementioned life value. Perhaps this also propelled me to become president of the SFU Real Estate Club. Originally, the club focused on connecting students to real estate careers during school and upon graduation. As incoming president, it was time for a change: instead of the original endeavour, I believe that it was apt to shift gears by educating students on the fundamentals of real estate, given that SFU currently provides no substantial resources for students to learn the practical elements of real estate. Our events now discuss topics such as "What to Look For When Buying a Home?" or "Should you Buy or Rent?" My goal is to provide value to whoever attends our events - for them to be able to make an informed real estate decision when the time comes. Although it is uncertain where I will end up, I will still not be dismayed. As Walt Disney once said,"If you can dream it, you can do it." That said, I continue to look forward to working in leadership and in the education realm, where I can utilize the skills acquired through these years to guide others and ultimately improve my core competencies and aptitude.
