About Ruby Kusters

ABOUT ME Curious, ambitious, and optimistic person with strong interpersonal skills. My experience ranges across varying academic and creative fields: from tutoring STEM subjects to producing a documentary, and from combating loneliness among elderly as a social worker to fostering an inclusive Maastricht University as part of the Diversity & Inclusivity Office. ACADEMIC BACKGROUND At University College Maastricht I focused on psychology and sociology, particularly following my passion for inclusive educational development. I am to design and develop (Dutch) education systems that promote social awareness and active citizenship. RESEARCH For my Bachelor’s thesis, I researched sexuality education in MBO (secondary vocational) schools in the Netherlands. Interviewing both students and experts in sex ed development, I identified the students’ needs concerning sexuality education, challenges to its implementation, and the appropriateness of the pleasure-based approach for MBO students. My research provides insights into the necessity of effective sexuality education that provides life skills in an open environment delivered by a confident professional. EXPERIENCE From February 2025 onwards, I got to apply my background in sociology and educational development to an internship at Humanity in Action The Netherlands. As Intern Educational Programs and Trainings, I was mainly tasked with the design and development of programs fostering open, constructive dialogue and active citizenship for students and (young) working professionals. My assignments also included writing funding applications, and sharing our program offer with HIA network members and the general public through our social channels.
