About Ruby Owiny

I have 25+ years of experience in education (13 years of K-5 public school teaching & 11 years in higher education; 4 years being in a doctoral program and serving as an adjunct instructor). I am skilled in Special Education, Instructional Methods, Instructional Design, Teacher Education Preparation, Applied Behavior Analysis, Adult Education, and Academic Advising. I earned my Ph.D. focused in Special Education Personnel Preparation from the University of Kentucky (2013). My research interests lie in inclusive practices including Universal Design for Learning, high-leverage practices, evidence-based practices, and behavioral and academic interventions. My expertise is primarily in specific learning disabilities and emotional behavioral disorders. I am passionate about every student being meaningfully engaged in their school community and seen as a valuable member of that community. Thus, I am founder and CEO of Pamoja Special Education Advocacy to partner with parents/caregivers to help ensure quality, meaningful, and appropriate educational programming for their child with disabilities. I am also committed to ensuring faith-based communities are equipped for meaningful inclusion of their congregants with disabilities and train religious leaders and volunteers in methods for doing that.
