About Ruby Pap

I have over 20 years of experience working in the coastal zone management field, in various capacities. For the past 12 years, I have served as a Coastal Land Use Extension Specialist with Hawai`i Sea Grant based on the Island of Kaua`i. I work as a liaison between researchers and county government, non-government organizations, and island residents to help ensure coastal science is usable and applicable to local needs. I use my background in coastal planning, science communication, and community facilitation in her work with Kaua'i coastal communities on various resiliency projects. These include community-based vulnerability assessments, climate adaptation planning, pre-disaster recovery planning, coastal restoration, and Native Hawaiian ʻāina based restoration projects such as loko ʻia (fish pond) and loʻi paʻakai (salt harvesting). I am also an FAA certificated drone pilot and I use this tool to gather coastal erosion and other data for community use. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Science from the University of Denver (1996) and a Master of Science degree in Resource Policy and Behavior from the University of Michigan (2002). I was hired by UH Sea Grant in 2012 after nine years working in the coastal management field in California with the California Coastal Commission, and the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission.
