About Russ Weiher

As a Data Engineer, I bridge the gap between the very different worlds of “Software Engineer” and “Database Administrator”. This means that when someone asks “Why is [Process X] so slow?”, I can see the problem much deeper than simply “the developers wrote bad queries” or “the database needs faster hardware”.It also means that I write automated import/export services, create web APIs, and build dashboards, as well as design data models, tune queries, and keep an eye on database growth and performance issues.When new data related technologies come along, I have no problem going off on my own to build a top to bottom POC. A significant amount of open-source software is started in and/or targeted towards Linux. I’m quite comfortable navigating the command line, writing scripts, installing software, and interacting with services in a linux environment. There are many types and sizes of database: I have production experience with relational (OLTP), analytic (OLAP), and NOSQL databases, and the handling billions of records in each.I believe that centralized logging can provide a wealth of useful information about the processes within an organization, as well as greatly reduce the time to find and resolve issues. To that end, I pushed for and have deployed an ELK Stack (now Elastic Stack) at multiple companies.(Including creating alerts and dashboards)Above all else: My job satisfaction is based on having interesting problems to solve, being given the latitude to solve them properly, and being recognized for the contributions those solutions make.
