About Rusty Hamm

I have been active in Emergency Services since 1997, all of my early years were spent in a volunteer capacity. In I entered Law Enforcement as a deputy with the Smyth County Sheriff's Office where I worked in the corrections setting. In 2002 I was hired by the Marion Police Department as a Police Officer, at the time I was the youngest person ever hired by the department. In 2010 I was promoted to Patrol Sergeant, again the youngest to hold this position in the history of the department. In 2013 I attended the Virginia Forensic Science Academy and in 2014 was promoted to Lieutenant where my work focused primarily in criminal investigations. In 2018 my role as Lieutenant changed to more of an administration role with special attention to management of daily police operations with an emphasis on management of high profile incidents. I also served with Marion Volunteer Fire Department during my career where I was a past Chief and until recently served as a Battalion Chief with a merged Marion/EMS department. I stepped away from leadership in Fire/EMS in an effort to focus on furthering my capabilities as a police administrator.
