About Rusty Sullivan

Rusty Sullivan is a proud United States Navy veteran, husband, and father of two. He has worked in the public safety profession as a law enforcement officer and firefighter/EMS/technical rescue technician for over 33 years. During those years Rusty served as a tactical medec and operator with U.S. law enforcement special operations teams (SWAT). He retired in 2015 and is now the Director of the, Metropolitan Community College - Public Safety Institute. Rusty also contracts for several security and personal protective agencies in the Kansas City area. Rusty is a national and international instructor in multiple areas regarding rescue operations, law enforcement, military, and emergency medical law enforcement procedures and public safety training. He is a graduate of the International Public Safety Leadership and Ethics programs, the famed United States Counter Narcotics and Terrorism Operational Medical Support (CONTOMS), and the Tactical Emergency Medical Team (TEMS) programs. He is an International Hostage Negotiator, and has expertise in communication psychology, physical use of force, and force/conflict psychology. He holds several advanced degrees including AAS in Criminal Justice, BA in Social Psychology, with an emphasis in public safety, and a Master’s in Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution. Rusty was a Professional Mixed Martial Art’s Referee and over the last twenty-five years has studied numerous forms of martial arts including Bushidokan, Aikido, Systema, boxing, Muay Thai, he holds formal ranks in Krav-Maga and is a black-belt in Gracie Jiu-jitsu. Rusty was the Missouri POST Subject Matter Expert in Tactical Communications/conflict management and the author of De-escalation through Social Intelligence. Rusty has published several professional journals/articles, developed cutting edges public safety courses – including law enforcement’s De-escalation through Social Intelligence, Response to Resistance and Good Medicine in Bad Places.
